What's A Girl To Do?

Here's the skinny, we are moving to China. We will be packing and storing all of our loot and heading to the other side of the planet with just a satchel or two. I have literally been in a state of shock since my husband came home with this news. We went to China in November to check out housing and schools and found many lovely options. Lulu and Deke are thrilled to begin this life changing adventure, so we feel extremely lucky.
I have been racking my brain on what I should do during our stay in China, Gar will be busy peddling dolls and the kids will be getting a wonderful international education and I am simply terrified. If only I had the skills of my friend Rebecca Ramsey, she wrote the most wonderful book about her adventures in France. I have also been pining for Keith Johnson's job at Anthropologie. Have you caught his show on the Sundance Channel? Keith travels to cool spots around the globe finding treasures for the designers at Anthropologie.
Can I open a cupcake stand in Shanghai or scour the countryside for kitsch? Yikes, any ideas?

It is exciting and you will think of something! Importing and exporting huh?

Congrats to you and the family.

And of course, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

How thrilling! You SHOULD do a book! Maybe not the same as Rebecca's, but why not catalog the collections--rare, unusual, antique and modern that people have over there? Right up your alley, I'd say!

ok, I just found you, so when you move to China, you cannot stop blogging. Please!

And second, yes, I have been pining for Keith Johnson's job for a decade. Can someone please pay me to travel and shop for a great store?!

I cannot wait to dig into your archives.

linda,
Don't be afraid!! My mother and stepfather have lived in Shanghai for 5 or 6 years now and are very happy there. Plenty of adventures await you and your family. And what a great experience for your kids. You won't regret it!

It will be a great a adventure ...and with your talent, and Lulu's hysterical observations, a book would definitely be entertaining...Best of luck!

HOLY CRAP!

Linda, that's fantastic! I can certainly understand your terror, but why can't you be the fabulous woman who writes a fabulous book about her adventure? Or the fabulous woman who finds fabulous stuff for us boring stateside folks? It has to be someone - why not you?

Also ... umm, if you're having a moving sale? I will buy a plane ticket to Chicago and rent a U-Haul to drive home. Your home is amazing, and your home in China will be amazing as well!

Ah, proverbial cat is out of the embroidered silk bag...

Deke and Lulu will adapt beautifully, it is their nature. You will be there to help them every step of the way, blogging it all, of course. Then, it will be published into a wonderful book for someday Ex-Pats to use as a handy field guide/reference.
