Serve It In A Hat

I consider myself to be very low maintenance, so when I do require something extra I am terribly embarrassed. I was out to eat with the kids and I had a hankerin' for a certain kind of salad. With a half dozen substitutions, I could get this salad. I had to ask the Waitperson to substitute goat cheese for blue cheese, grilled chicken instead of fried, no onions...it was ridiculous and I was fully aware of this fact. I apologized to the lovely woman taking my order and I said "this is my last special request, could you serve my salad in a hat?" I figured this was a not so subtle way of letting her know that I was being a pain. Unfortunately, Lulu saw that she had written down "salad in a hat" under my order. I sheepishly had to explain that I was joking. I still wonder what the kitchen staff would have done with this request.

Until I became disabled earlier this year I'd always worked in restaurants. All the other servers would always complain about people being picky. But I really never did mind. As long as someone was communicating to me with respect, I had no problem taking down an order a mile long. They're paying for it, it should be how they like it.

It's funny that the server wrote it down, but from that perspective, I can see how she would just instinctly write down whatever you were saying. Servers tend to go into 'robot' mode. I think because it is really hard to work with the public, and the less you take personally, the better.

So, was your salad delish?

Okay, so YOU were the inspiration for Sally in When Harry Met Sally - hope you didn't also inspire the famous "I'll have what she's having" scene! And, um, now I'm hungry.

I thought the same thing as Tumble Fish. Wonderful story.

LOL! Hey, you may as well get what you want especially since food at restaurants is a bit pricey these days. Now would you have been floored had they served it in a hat? Hopefully it would have been a clean one.

Ha! I do the same thing sometimes, but isn't that the point of going out to eat? And if I see the ingredient used elsewhere on the menu I know it isn't that big of a pain.

I'm laughing OUT LOUD and will forever order "salad in a hat" in the future! That was awesome.

Loopy and I just got home - save for a case of air rage on the plane! I was assigned the same seat as another passenger but got there first. She demanded her seat! She created such a fuss, without demanding anything in a hat, even! She was mean to the flight attendants and held our plane up for an hour at Midway Airport while it got sorted out. Loopy had to sit beside her and was pretty close to tears.

On the bright side, we had a wonderful visit with you and Lulu... Loopy can't wait to get logged into Facebook this week and connect up!

Thanks again for everything,
will be posting it all tomorrow!
