What Not To Wear

I am turning my attention to my very pitiful wardrobe this week, it consists of black shirts, black pants and khaki pants. A few years ago I wanted to change things up so I switched from black shirts to gray, that didn't last very long. Johnny Cash would tell me to add a little color to my wardrobe. I recently participated in a marketing project for a department store, I was given a gift card with $200.00 on it and I was instructed to buy something for myself. I know most people couldn't buy a pair of pants for $200.00, I bought black pants, black shirt, black jacket, a little black purse and boots. It was a bit embarrassing to reveal that I could be outfitted from head to toe for 200 bucks! I realized that I never buy quality pieces for myself. I have embraced the dumpy Mom uniform and I need to find style again.

Ooh - so what is your plan for getting all styleriffic? I am a t-shirts and jeans sort of gal, and would like to branch out, but I don't even know where to start. Perhaps we need a support group.

Just don't buy jeans for a few years if you can help it!

One of my favorite things to do is hunt the second hand stores, especially those in collage towns. I can find the best stuff at incredible prices, and no one else has it! I think if you know a little about clothes and fashion, know what fabrics work for you, what sizes, what's in, then you'll have much more luck finding clothes. I read Vogue, Elle and W religiously. It really helps, plus it's FUN!

How about picking one color and slowing adding accessories in that color? EVERYTHING goes with black! Dark blue or plum might be good. They're huge this season and they're not that radical a departure form your basic black.

I'm with you. I love my uniform, as dumpy mom as it is, because I don't have to think about it. White tee, khaki or jean or black capris, I'm ready to go. Not to go anywhere stylish, but when do I do that anyway!

Linda I'm excited to meet you. Home Companion is my favorite magazine, and I'm excited to see you right of the pages of it!
But I'm so sad to hear that the Christmas issue is the last! Where will I go for non cookie cutter design ideas?

It's great to meet you!

Linda, I think we were separated at birth. Black is my favorite color and a big part of my "wardrobe". I like big tall dark and handsome Johhny Cash. I am a "winter" though, and black, brown, navy blue, red, plum are my "good" colors. I have (or used to have) very dark hair (almost black) that is very very short and spikey and now mostly snow white (even though I am only 42!) and have light eyes. So, black is my best color. Outside of light and photography venues, black is the sum of all colors (vs. in light and photography it is the absence of color or light technically). Anyway, I like to think of black as a complete rainbow, the mixture of all things so it is cheery and happy to me. Plus, I am matchy matchy so it is easy to match boots/shoes (or my favorite Swedish Ecco clogs), socks and purses, belts, jackets , etc. I love a good black sweater, blue jeans (holes and paint smears fine for flea marketing) and my square toe black boots (with a colorful scarf if I'm feeling a little wild and crazy) Day to day, I wear my 16 year old son's old shorts and Life is Good t-shirts and flip flops - basically look homeless most of the time. Good for you on taking care of you and spending money on YOU (free as it was - you could've bought sheets or something and that would be very sad)! Have a great Friday!

Ohhhhh.... I wish I could NOT relate to everything said in this excellent post. Can you STAND a word of cautionary advise from someone older but not wiser? I let things go for myself, because I of course, wanted all the new, wonderful things for my daughter... well, now that Miss Bird is 18 and the buying has slowed a tad (she doesn't grow out of her clothes every six months, for example) I realize that I need to start over on my "wardrobe" (ha! what wardrobe?!) and build from the ground up! Toooooo much to invest now, and what a mistake! Keep up ladies... buy a little something every couple of months and change out the older things. Seems like 'selfishness' at the time, but believe me, it's not! Now, anyone want to send me a new Louis Vuitton to get the ball rolling?
